The only album by this British folk trio, who debuted from DMJ in June 1970, has been released in a paper jacket. In the US, they are known as Marian Segal & Silver Jade (because there was a group with the same name), and they have been popular among soft rock fans. In 2003, they gained recognition and popularity when they were released on CD with a different jacket, but the original British version is quite rare, so many fans will be happy to see the release in a paper jacket. Dave Waite on guitar supported Marian's musical style, which is similar to Sandy Denny, but the addition of Rod Edwards of Edward Hand added a pop/rock aspect, and John Wetton, James Litherland of the Coliseum, and Pete York of the Spencer Davis Group played a performance unique to British rock. Among the four bonus tracks, there is Joni Mitchell's ⑭ and James Taylor's ⑮, suggesting an American orientation. 』
Record Collectors March 2008 issue, liner notes by Mitsuji Wakui
The California-based duo of Marianne Segal, a girl with an angelic voice, and Dave Waite came to England with the help of John Miller and John Wetton. They formed Jade with Rod Edwards, who had worked with Wetton in Edwards Hand. This is their only work, and is a masterpiece of progressive folk rock that is considered to be on par with the work of Fairport Convention when Sandy Denny was in the band. The album also features a number of other impressive guests, including Terry Cox of Pentangle. 』Tower Records liner
Jade's [Fly on Strange Wing] is a masterpiece that combines traditional British folk with an American flavor and is completed by top British musicians. The songs are great, and the female vocalist Marianne Segal's voice is lively and elegant, but not country-like. The names of the backing musicians are impressive, including John Wetton from King Crimson, Pete York from the Spencer Davis Group, and Powerhouse. Rod Edwards was also active in the folk duo "Picady Line" in the late 60s.
